Sub Pop Records

Sub Pop Records is an independent record label founded in 1986 by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in Seattle, Washington. It is known for launching some of the most iconic bands of the 1990s grunge scene, such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney.

Sub Pop began its operations with a fanzine called Subterranean Pop, created by Bruce Pavitt while he was attending The Evergreen State College.

Years later, it launched the Sub Pop Singles Club, a subscription service that sent vinyl singles from local bands to subscribers each month.

The label is widely credited with helping to popularize grunge, making the name Sub Pop synonymous with Seattle music.

In 1995, Sub Pop's owners sold a 49% stake in the label to Warner Music Group.
