Every day, more than 100 THOUSAND new songs are released on the major streaming platforms. Yes, every day!
Yet only a few songs reach the general public: those released by mainstream record labels. It's the so-called commercial music, often synonymous with pop music (not to be confused with the pop genre, they are two different things, we talk about it here).
Even radios broadcast more or less the same new songs every week. They are almost always songs released by mainstream record labels and are almost all songs that could be defined as "commercial" or "pop" (meaning popular).
Mainstream record labels look for the recipe for success, which is largely based on what the public likes and what is trendy now, therefore on what is "pop". Radios, to keep the ratings high, follow the same recipe, choosing mostly "pop" songs. The general public passively listens to the music that plays on the radio, shaping their own musical taste, which becomes the new "pop".
It's a vicious circle, in which we end up listening to the same old things over and over!
But it's not just a matter of taste.
Music is culture and this flattening of musical listening risks causing a cultural flattening.
Music conveys messages and can help us grow. But always conveying the same type of "pop" messages risks making us obtuse and ignorant.
Music is emotion and expression. Listening only to music designed to make hits and money risks making us emotionally arid and insensitive.
For musicians, music is a matter of love and passion. For mainstream record companies and commercial radio stations it is mostly a matter of money. Lots of money. Which, due to this system, almost all of it ends up in the pockets of a few artists, who earn huge amounts of money, while most talented musicians cannot make a living just by making music.
unPop was born from this reflection on the world of music and the music industry.
unPop is not "against" commercial music and it is not "against" world-famous artists or major record labels.
unPop is a movement that moves away from the mainstream to explore everything that is indie, that comes from the diy scene, from self-productions and independent record labels.
unPop is made up of a team of musicians and music enthusiasts. Our mission is to make indie music known, listened to and loved by as many people as possible.
Every week we listen to hundreds of songs from independent artists and labels, we select them and create thematic playlists, which are published on Youtube and Spotify. We do not claim to select the best releases of the week. Instead, we try to offer an overview of all the artists and songs that we believe stand out for creativity, originality, high-quality production... and that make us feel excited, dance, dream.
If you love too the indie music and believe in the value of what we do, support us and help us make unPop known to as many people as possible.
If you want to receive the new playlists in real time, subscribe to our Telegram channel or sign up to receive newsletters via email.
Thank you and happy listening from the unPop team
